The rivalry that started it all. Back in the day League of Legends was very, very young. There were a few players that tried to dominate the scene. HotshotGG and Reginald. They were good. They were in the same team for a little while called Counter-Logic Gaming. But that soon came to an end. Reginald left the team and decided to create his own team, to rival CLG’s reign. He built his team based around his then website, and that was how Team SoloMid was born. Currently it is known as just TSM (TSM FTX fully, although they are not allowed to use that sponsorship tag everywhere).

These two teams surely had plenty of run-ins into each other. From their 1176 days streak where CLG just could not beat TSM.

To various bets, including the bet between the two team owners, which made the iconic scene where HotShotGG had his hair painted pink.

But those little stories are for some other people to write about. All I am interested in in this article, is their head to head matches. And we will go through all of it here.

Match History

2011

2011 06 18 - Worlds Season 1 - TSM > CLG

The year that started the official competitive scene. The very first world championship, that would later grow the League of Legends esports scene into LCS/LEC and other leagues we enjoy now. TSM took third place, CLG - 5th in that World Championship. Leaving first and second place to Europe to claim its place among the elites. For the first time, because it wasn’t considered very strong back in the day. The EU was plagued with server issues and it took a while for the region to get rolling. But they did show up in the first global tournament and introduced bot lane consisting of ADC+Support duos, forever changing how league is being played.

The first year of NA LCS. And the story was simple. TSM dominated in Spring, CLG dominated in Summer split. But when time came, during the playoffs TSM made it out ahead, beating CLG handily 2:0.

2014 07 12 - NA LCS 2014 Summer- TSM < CLG

2014 07 27 - NA LCS 2014 Summer- TSM > CLG

Next year, CLG started off losing the regular split against TSM in Spring, but winning the last game before playoffs. Many viewers thought that might be a close series and it was, but TSM beat CLG 2:1 and claimed another victory. So far, the rivalry is really going TSM’s way.

In Summer, these two teams went 2:2, but CLG lost in their first round of playoffs 3:0 to Curse and TSM went on to win the entire split, beating Dignitas, LMQ and Cloud9.

2015

2015 06 28 - NA LCS 2015 Summer - TSM > CLG

2015 08 23 - NA LCS 2015 Summer Playoffs - TSM 0:3 CLG

We started off 2015 with TSM handily beating CLG twice in the regular season. As the story seemed to go, TSM went on to win the entire split in playoffs, beating TIP and Cloud9. CLG struggled and lost 3:0 to TL in the quarterfinals.

Summer started the same way, TSM handily beating CLG. But then came the playoffs. CLG did not go out in their first series. They beat TIP 3:0 and waited in the Finals. TSM beat GV 3:1, TL 3:1 and then qualified into the Final match against CLG. And it was a glorious revenge for CLG fans.

3:0 was the score. CLG were the winners of the split.

2016

2016 01 16 - NA LCS 2016 Spring - TSM < CLG

2016 02 14 - NA LCS 2016 Spring - TSM > CLG

2016 06 04 - NA LCS 2016 Summer - TSM > CLG

2016 07 03 - NA LCS 2016 Summer - TSM > CLG

2016 07 03 - NA LCS 2016 Summer - TSM > CLG

2016 08 21 - NA LCS 2016 Summer Playoffs - TSM 3:0 CLG

This year started great for CLG, basically riding off their previous split win, they managed to go 1:1 During the regular split and then win a great series that went all the way. They beat TSM 3:2 and won the Spring. But it quickly went very downhill from there. Four straight losses to TSM in the Summer split and a crushing 3:0 defeat in Playoffs.

2017

2017 02 04 - NA LCS 2017 Spring - TSM < CLG

2017 02 04 - NA LCS 2017 Spring - TSM > CLG

2017 06 11 - NA LCS 2017 Summer - TSM < CLG

2017 06 11 - NA LCS 2017 Summer - TSM > CLG

2017 08 06 - NA LCS 2017 Summer - TSM > CLG

2017 08 06 - NA LCS 2017 Summer - TSM > CLG

The year of 2017 wasn’t a good one for the rivalry. TSM would lose the first game of the split and then beat CLG three times in a row. Never meeting them in the playoffs because CLG would not go far. While TSM won both splits. Beating every other team they met in the Playoffs.

At this point, CLG fans were distraught. The rivalry seemed dead and there was next to no hope for CLG.  And they were right. CLG almost never managed to beat TSM ever since.

2018

2018 02 11 - NA LCS 2018 Spring - TSM > CLG

2018 03 18 - NA LCS 2018 Spring - TSM > CLG

2018 06 16 - NA LCS 2018 Summer - TSM > CLG

2018 08 11 - NA LCS 2018 Summer - TSM > CLG

2019

2019 06 02 - LCS 2019 Summer - TSM > CLG

2020

2020 02 04 - LCS 2020 Spring - TSM > CLG

2020 03 01 - LCS 2020 Spring - TSM < CLG

2020 07 05 - LCS 2020 Summer - TSM > CLG

2020 07 26 - LCS 2020 Summer- TSM > CLG

2021

2021 02 07 - LCS 2021 Spring - TSM > CLG

2021 02 27 - LCS 2021 Spring - TSM > CLG

2021 06 13 - LCS 2021 Summer - TSM > CLG

2021 07 09 - LCS 2021 Summer - TSM < CLG

And this is where we are now. The last time CLG beat TSM in the playoffs was in the 2016 Spring.

Ever since then, TSM just outperformed CLG and they barely ever met outside of regular split. And the regular split wasn’t really a rivalry, just TSM consistently beating CLG with rare flukes where CLG managed to scrape a win. Currently TSM are very well off in second place in the standings, leading into the last super-week of 2021. While CLG is dead last, with a very slim chance to qualify for playoffs at all.

But they will meet one more time on August 1st. No one is really expecting CLG to win. But the Rivalry might one day be reignited.

Rivalry Results: TSM 49:21 CLG
